The catechins, chiefly EGCG at 50–100 mg per brewed cup, and caffeine at 20–45 mg stimulate gastric acid secretion into an empty stomach. That produces the same queasy, acidic feeling as black coffee on an empty stomach.
The fix is straightforward: drink it with or just after food, or switch to a lower-caffeine option such as hojicha, which is roasted and runs around 15–20 mg caffeine per cup. If you take high-dose EGCG capsules rather than tea, the risk profile is different and worth discussing with a pharmacist.
How long does St. John's wort nausea last?
For most users it is mild and settles within 1–2 weeks of continued daily use, as the gut adapts. Taking it with a meal reduces the effect considerably. If nausea persists past two weeks or intensifies, that is a reason to stop rather than push through.
Severity matters more than duration here. St. John's wort induces CYP3A4 and interacts with a long list of drugs, and combined with an SSRI it can precipitate serotonin syndrome. If two weeks of these changes does not help, the tea is probably not the real problem.
